Janus was born in Bronte, Italy to a pair of complete opposites. His mother and father somehow managed to find love for each other and have a child, but no one really knows how that happened, or how they didn't kill each other in the process – but this story isn't about them. Janus seemed to be a rather normal child, causing trouble, playing with toys, running around and being the typical pain in the ass. He was the apple of his grandfather's eye, and he spent so much time at his grandfather's home in Venice that he didn't even seem to notice when his parents split and ran off to never be seen again. Well, after all, his grandfather had more or less raised him this far, with little help from his birth parents, so what did it matter? It was when Janus was 14 he first discovered his powers. It was actually by complete accident, as it tends to be; he was playing with some friends from school when they came across a boy who was always picked on in class. He'd obviously been beaten up by the school bullies, but they had never been violent until now. When Janus asked the boy why, he said it was because he had asked a girl out that one of the bullies had liked, and they beat him up for that. Between sobs, he told Janus he wished she couldn't even remember who he was. Wishful thinking of youth, no? So, like the nice guy Janus was, he went to speak with the girl. The next morning at school he managed to catch her in the hall and went to ask her about the whole mess, to tell her what had happened. He wanted her to pretend she never knew what happened, but in the process of their talk (or, his talk, as she just rolled her eyes), someone tripped and fell into her. Of course, like dominoes, she also fell, and Janus attempted to catch her – but being young and klutzy, one of his hands actually hit her in the face (which, if this had been a normal day, with a normal kid, this wouldn't have been anything other than a stupid thing) – and suddenly, his wish of her wanting to forget about everything came true. He felt a jolt of energy go up his arm, and suddenly he watched the whole scene play out in his memories – the kid asking her out to the movies, and her laughing at him before she walked off to tell her boyfriend, the bully that had kicked the kid's rear. When she finally pulled herself away from Janus, she asked him what they were talking about. Confused, he mentioned the boy, as if trying to jog her memory, but she told him she had no clue who he was even talking about and needed to get to class. That was the first time he used his powers, but he just figured she was being a silly girl and let it go. A few months later he managed to use his power again, this time jokingly. A friend had stolen the answers to an upcoming math test, and Janus playfully slapped him in the forehead and said “forget those answers, man.” Can we see what happened next? Janus suddenly found the answer key in his head, and his friend looked at him as if he was crazy. For a while he believed perhaps he was crazy, until he began to experiment with it. He would tell a neighbor something, then pretend to swat away a bug, removing the memory. It was all a game to him, because in his mind there was no reason to use it for anything evil. Times and people change. At seventeen, his grandfather passed due to old age, and Janus was willed the family estate. He was then shipped off to China to live with his uncle, who pretended Janus wasn't even there. This lasted for two years, until Janus decided that if his uncle wanted to pretend he didn't exist, then he simply wouldn't exist to him. This was the first real test of his power, a serious test. While his uncle slept, he snuck into the room and placed his hand on his uncle's forehead. He then willed away all memories that his uncle had of him, and grabbed all the belongings he could put in a duffel bag and left. He was lucky enough to have inherited money from his grandfather's passing, and headed to Hong Kong, where he's been ever since. |
It's quite hard to sum up Janus in only a few words, but if one were to do so it would be “openly sociable.” He's excited to meet new people, make new friends, but most importantly show that he's striving on his own without help from anyone – the one thing that teenagers always wish to do, but rarely can. He's goofy, which almost certainly makes him a /b/tard, and he's a video game nut. While he plays RPGs, he tends to like to play strategy games like Warcraft and Starcraft, constantly bitching about “OMG THAT FUCKING ZERG RUSH WTF IS THIS SHIT?” No one would think it, but he's a really good cook – but he's lazy. He'll survive for weeks on end on ramen noodles and green tea when he could easily cook himself great meals for cheap. He's not exactly the kind of guy you'd want for a roommate though, unless the deal was that he cooks and you clean – Janus cannot, for the life of him, keep his apartment clean. It looks as if a hurricane blew through it, then a tornado plowed through, then the earth shook afterwards just to finish things off. Clothing (both dirty and clean), bottles (empty and full!), paper plates, magazines, books, DVD cases – you name it, it's probably on the floor somewhere. Oddly enough, his desk and his entertainment stand are completely spotless... save for the mountain of soda cans he's been building a fortress out of for the past year. Like any young guy, he's attracted pretty much to anything with breasts. Oh boy oh boy summer is his favorite time of year, you can believe it. It can sometimes become a conflict of interests – does he spend his last $40 on food, or does he take it to the strip club? Decisions, decisions. |
The power to “erase” memories; Janus has the ability to erase the memories of people by placing a hand against their forehead and willing the memories away. However, this ability doesn't erase ALL memories, only specific ones that he can pick out. If he doesn't know the person has the memory, he cannot erase it. For example, he cannot erase the memories of a character who can build nuclear weaponry without first knowing that they know that skill, and second knowing a bit about how they learned the skill / where they learned the skill, so he can shut away those memories. It's a lot easier for him to erase the memories of someone who was traumatized recently, because they tend to be more vocal about it. Examples of his power would include: A character's wife is murdered, he could erase the memories of the wife from the character, or of her death. It could be used to keep secrets as well. Erase is a bad word for what this power actually does to people. Truthfully, while Janus can't explain it, the memories are transferred over the touch into his own mind. While this gives him a much broader view of the details of things, it also adds into his own psyche. The long-term effects of him doing this to traumatized people is unknown, but it certainly cannot be healthy. The drawback to his power, little does he know, is when he dies these memories that were “erased” are restored at once. |
